Walnut Creek BART Worker Suffers Back Injury

Contractor fell in a ditch and struck a drainpipe Tuesday morning.

A contractor doing earthquake safety work on columns at the Walnut Creek BART station hurt his back Tuesday morning after falling into a ditch.

The accident occurred around 10 a.m. Tuesday. The worker was transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

The work fell into a ditch about four feet deep and his lower body struck a drainpipe, said BART spokesman Jim Allison. He called out for help. A co-worker was running a power tool in an adjacent hole and didn't hear. BART passengers walking by on the other side of the fence heard the call for help and alerted the other worker, who called 9-1-1, said Allison.
