Walnut Creek PD Plans DUI Checkpoint Friday night

Prevention effort on Lawrence Way ties in with national effort of thousands of police agencies.

Walnut Creek police will have a DUI/driver's license checkpoint at 9 p.m. Friday on Lawrence Way.

In this effort, the department is joining nearly 10,000 other law enforcement agencies around the nation in cracking down on impaired driving.

“All too often, innocent, law-abiding people suffer tragic consequences due to this careless disregard for human life," said Walnut Creek Police Chief Joel Bryden. "Because we’re committed to ending impaired driving, we’re intensifying enforcement during the crackdown. Since twice as many alcohol-impaired accidents occur over the weekend and four times as many occur at night, we will be especially vigilant during these high-risk times when impaired drivers are most likely to be on our roads.”

I still don't understand why law enforcement would announce the location of a DUI checkpoint! Wouldn't word of mouth spread even before Friday night, giving drunken party-goers a head start?

Thank you, WCPD, for participating in the DUI checkpoint program! But, I agree with Jonathan: why advertise the exact location?

The advance publicity along with signage on the road allowing semi-literate drunks and unlicensed drivers to avoid the checkpoint altogether is required, thanks to case law sponsored by the ACLU and other similar organizations that routinely protect the rights of those that feel that they are not responsible for their own behavior and to whom society's laws do not apply.
