Walnut Creeker Killed in Nevada Accident

Pedestrian, 21, was walking along Highway 50 and struck by a California Highway Patrol vehicle.

A 21-year-old Walnut Creek man was struck and killed by two vehicles, one of them a California Highway Patrol Ford Expedition, on Highway 50 just across the state line in Nevada at 12:40 a.m. Sunday.

The victim has not been identified, pending notification of next of kin, according to a piece in SouthTahoeNow.com.

The victim was walking along Highway 50 near Stateline in the Sierra Nevada, in a left eastbound travel lane when the CHP vehicle in the same lane was trying to avoid him, according to an article on the KOLO TV website.

The victim was knocked into a westbound lane and run over by a shuttle bus, KOLO reported. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal.

The CHP officer, Joshua J. Varanini of Truckee, was returning to the Truckee station from New Year's Eve duties at casinos in Stateline, SouthTahoeNow.com reported.

The accident closed the highway for several hours.
