Cindy Silva Announces Her Run For City Council

This is the official news release Cindy Silva sent out announcing her run for Walnut Creek City Council.

After serving four years on the Walnut Creek City Council, Mayor Pro Tem Cindy Silva has announced that she intends to run for re-election in November for a second four-year term. If re-elected, Silva will serve as the City's next Mayor.

"It has been an honor to serve as a City Councilmember the past four years," Silva said. "We have accomplished a lot, including the opening of the new Walnut Creek Library on time and significantly under budget, preservation of additional open space lands, downtown parking improvements, and the grassroots effort of Yes for Walnut Creek to support Broadway Plaza and our economic future."

Silva has the endorsement of her fellow Councilmembers; former Mayors Kathy Hicks, Gwen Regalia, and Charlie Abrams; and a diverse group of community members representing the arts, education and library services, recreation, open space and creeks, business, neighborhoods, and Rossmoor.

In addition to working actively on the private fundraising for the new library – which raised more than $5 million – and with the Yes for Walnut Creek campaign, Silva says she is particularly proud of her work to improve the Council's community outreach efforts. She championed the establishment of the Council's booths at the downtown and Rossmoor Farmers Markets and for the 2009 Community Conversations program, which was an integral part of the budget-balancing process. She also spearheaded the Council's Rossmoor Liaison Program and has served as one of two Council liaisons to that community for the past two years.

Currently, Silva represents the City in a number of regional capacities, including as chair of TRANSPAC, the regional transportation planning committee for Central Contra Costa. In that role, she is leading the Central County effort on safe routes to schools issues, including crossing guards.

In addition to her work for the City, Silva has been an active community volunteer for more than 10 years. She is scholarship chair of the Walnut Creek Fountain for Youth Foundation, bookstore chair of the East Bay Women's Conference, publicity chair for One City One Book: Walnut Creek Reads, and a member of the Acalanes High School District Measure A Oversight Committee. She is past president of Las Lomas High School's PTSA and past president of the Walnut Creek Swim Conference and served six years on the board of the Walnut Creek Soccer Club. Prior to her election to the City Council, Silva was a member of the Planning Commission.

"Of course, these are critical times and there's still more work to do. I believe Walnut Creek needs proven, innovative leadership, and I look forward to working with my colleagues and the community to applying my energy and experience to navigate the challenges we face."
