City Council to Review Broadway Plaza Plan at Special Meeting

Walnut Creek City Council will hold a special session Tuesday with other boards, followed by its regular meeting at 7 p.m.

The concept will get an official airing before members of the Walnut Creek City Council, Planning Commission, Design Review Commission and Transportation Commission on Tuesday.

The four bodies will meet in a special joint session at 4 p.m. in the third floor conference room at City Hall, 1666 N. Main St., to begin "conversations ... between the eventual decision-making bodies and the applicant, Macerich, with the intent of identifying and defining the project focus and direction," according to the council agenda.

The from recent community meetings with the developer will be presented, but there's no public hearing at the session and no formal actions will be taken by the council or commissions.

Representatives of Macerich, the company that owns Broadway Plaza, have held a series of community meetings to solicit ideas from the public on the future of the shopping center. Among the most popular have been better pedestrian access, better traffic flow and parking, a "public square" and more green space.

After the Broadway Plaza session, council members will move to the first floor council chambers at 7 p.m. for their regular meeting, with a long-term financial plan for the city and possible changes to alarm permit fees and false alarm fines on their agenda.

City staff will present the "Long Term Financial Plan: General Fund 2010-20" for council approval. Council members asked for the plan earlier this year "to help anticipate economic changes that may require action and to provide guidance in preparing future budgets," the agenda says.

A proposed ordinance that would affect fees and fines for security alarm systems is also coming before the council.
