Companies Vying For Potential $1 Billion Contract For Central Contra Costa Trash Pick-Up

There's an old saying that one person's garbage is another person's gold.
That's certainly the case right now in the Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority.
The agency is accepting bids for a potential 20-year contract worth $1 billion to pick up trash at 65,000 households in Walnut Creek, Danville, Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda, according to a story in the Contra Costa Times.
Among the bidders is Republic Services of Arizona and Garaventa Enterprises of Concord, according to the Times.
The solid waste agency is expected to decide in March who gets the contract.
Allied Waste, which was purchased by Republic Services in 2008, has had the garbage collection franchise since 1990. Valley Waste Management has the recycling contract. Both deals expire in March 2015.
The contract is expected to be a 10-year deal worth $500 million with a likely 10-year extension, according to the Times.
The contract will also contain a provision to meet a state mandate to recycle by 2020 at least 75 percent of garbage that would have gone into landfills. Right now, 66 percent is recycled.
