Council Discusses Growth Plans For Broadway Plaza

Mall owner schedules three meetings for public input; the first one is Oct. 4.

The Walnut Creek City Council talked over a public process for input on the future vision for Broadway Plaza with two representatives of the owner who attended Tuesday's meeting.

"We're look for a long-range master plan — one that works for city residents and Broadway Plaza, and is beneficial for everyone," said Chuck Davis, vice president of development for Macerich of Santa Monica. The ultimate master plan will improve parking for the 60-year-old, outdoor plaza, he vowed.

"It will be a better experience for shoppers and diners," said Davis. "It will be more connected with downtown Walnut Creek."

"I like the fact that you are soliciting community ideas before you come out with a fixed design," Mayor Pro Tem Bob Simmons told the Macerich representatives.

Macerich has tentatively set up three meetings to get community input.

  • Oct. 24 time and place to be determined.
  • Nov. 16 time and place to be determined.

Council member Kish Rajan thanked Macerich for its commitment to community outreach.

He said he hoped improvements to Broadway Plaza "would be a rising tide that lifts the boat of other parts of downtown."

He said the city and the owner would work together on issues such as parking, transit and public safety.

Mayor Cindy Silva also underscored the symbiosis of Broadway Plaza and other sections of downtown. She urged the owners to make pedestrian amenities part of the plan.

She advocated that they work with Friends of the Creeks to include improvements to creeks that run in concrete channels under Broadway Plaza.
