County Pest Control Committee Seeks Applicants

Do you think that local government should use as many methods as possible when controlling pests, and do its best to minimize the use of pesticides?

Would you like to have an active voice in Contra Costa County's pest management program?

Then you should consider applying for a position on the Integrated Pest Management Advisory Committee. The county is presently seeking applicants for a vacancy on that panel. The position will be through December of this year.

The IPM committee advises the Board of Supervisors on integrated pest management techniques on county-owned land. That includes using goats for weed control, introducing other plants into an area to compete with unwanted weeds, and other biological and non-pesticide methods of controlling pests.

The county uses the University of California's model of integrated pest management, which calls for as much variety as possible in the control of pests, to minimize the use of chemicals, which can have a harmful effect on plants, animals and people.

Applicants must live or work in Contra Costa County and have knowledge of IPM practices. Applications can be obtained by:

  • Calling the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors at 925-335-1900;
  • Writing or visiting the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors at 651 Pine Street, 1st floor, Martinez, CA 94553;
  • Visiting cchealth.org/ipm and following the link to a printable application.

Applications must be received by 4:30 PM on Monday, June 3, 2013 in the office of the Clerk of the Board: 651 Pine Street, 1st Floor, Martinez 94553. Allapplicants will be interviewed on Tuesday, June 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Room 101, 651 Pine Street, Martinez.
