Either The City Has Shrunk Or …

Sign welcoming freeway exiters to Walnut Creek undershoots the population. Are we looking for that small town feel?

As a motorist applies the brakes coming off Highway 24 and contemplates finding a parking spot in downtown Walnut Creek, the green city sign greets her.

And on Friday it was reading population 3,400. That's a little low. The 2010 census had the city of Walnut Creek at 64,173, down a smidge from 64,296 in 2000.

The sign along the beginning of Mount Diablo Boulevard — in the shadow of the big triangle of freeway overpasses — shows signs that someone might have painted over a fifth digit in the tens of thousands spot.

The elevation says 135. That sounds about right.
