Homes, Pedestrians, Bicycles Envisioned For West Downtown Area

City Council discusses the latest version of the development for that region of Walnut Creek

The Walnut Creek City Council got a glimpse Tuesday night of the latest version of a development plan for the western sector of downtown.

The proposed West Downtown Specific Plan calls for new homes along Mt. Diablo Boulevard while keeping high-density development away from the Almond-Shuey neighborhood, according to a story in the Contra Costa Times.

The plan also envisions mixed-use residential-retail developments along California Boulevard the next 30 years with office-only uses closer to the freeway and multi-family complexes near the BART station, the Times reported.

The plan calls for measures to make the region pedestrian and bicycle friendly for residents who don't drive.

The study area is roughly bounded by Ygnacio Valley Road on the north, California Boulevard on the east, Mt. Diablo Boulevard on the south and Interstate 680 on the west.

The specific plan study is costing $600,000. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission is chipping in $450,000 while the city is paying for $150,000.
