Nighttime Photo Shows Off 'Fountain Head'

Updated, July 5, added links and photo, and fixed a typo.

Here's the best photo I've seen yet of The Head That Took Over Downtown Walnut Creek.

That's an exaggeration there about the sculpture, "Fountain Head," by Seyed Alavi, recently installed in front of the Mechanics Bank on North Main Street. But there have been a lot of comments — pro and con and some mixed feelings — on a Patch story and a Patch Facebook entry. This nighttime photo is by Scarlett Mijatovich.

On her blog, Mijatovich had a strong reaction to "Fountain Head:" 

"SERIOUSLY?!?! Who replaces a perfectly good and NORMAL stone fountain with THIS?!!?! I feel like it's just going to open its eyes and swallow us..
(Oh and note the water splashing out from the top of his head!!)
We then drove around the rest of the town to see if any other fountains had been DESTROYED AND STRIPPED OF THEIR PRIDE. Luckily none were except fro a second stone fountain on the same street, only it had been replaced with just a small ball instead of a giant scary head."

Her mom, Lara M., sent a letter to the mayor and shared it with us by email:

"I have lived in Walnut Creek for most of my life. I studied the arts in College.
I’m sure you are aware that there is a Huge Terrible Half Drowning Head in our public fountain across from Tomatina on Main Street.
If I were a small child, I’d have bad dreams about that one.
I have never seen anything more unattractive or out of place in my life.
I’m very curious how it came to be half drowned in our little fountain. Please explain!"

Seyed Alavi said he wanted the fountain to be a community focal point, as fountains historically have been centers of community life, according to an article in the Contra Costa Times. And he wanted it to be playful because fountains attract children.

The Walnut Creek Facebook entry (you can find it here, dated June 29) on "Fountain Head" has drawn 17 comments and counting. I reprint them here to give an idea of variety:
