October is Creek and Channel Safety Awareness Month

Contra Costa County says, 'Stay out — stay alive.'

Contra Costa County, learning the lessons from a double fatal accident in February in Walnut Creek, has declared October Creek and Channel Safety Awareness Month.

"The flood control channels are part of our community’s infrastructure and, like freeways or railroad tracks, should never be used for recreation," the county states in its campaign. The county's message is  "Stay out — stay alive."

The campaign's outreach includes video reminders and banners for the schools. School administrators have been very cooperative, said County Supervisor Karen Mitchoff, speaking last week to the Walnut Creek City Council.

After a heavy rain in February, that carried them through a tunnel and into the San Ramon Creek bypass. They drowned.
