Planning Commish to Discuss Orchards at Walnut Creek Thursday

Safeway's plans call for a grocery, restaurants, and a health club at the corner of Ygnacio Valley and Oak Grove roads.

The Walnut Creek Planning Commission is holding a special meeting Thursday evening to study a proposal to put 219,000 square feet of new commercial space at the corner of Ygnacio Valley and Oak Grove roads.

The commission will look at the project's impact on traffic and whether the proposal is a good use of the 25-acre parcel. Opponents of the project argue that a new Safeway with a footprint of 55,000 square feet will hurt nearby grocery stores and will contribute to traffic congestion in the area.

For its part, Safeway says that Walnut Creek residents want the larger selection and increased services offered by a larger store.
