Post Office's Busiest Day in Walnut Creek

Line is 30 deep at the downtown Post Office on North Broadway.

Monday was due to be the busiest postal day of the year, the experts say, even as scenarios are being cast to downsize or eliminate the U.S. Postal Service.

It added up to a line 30 people deep, out to the outer lobby with the postal boxes, at 11 a.m. Monday at Walnut Creek's main post office on North Broadway.

Toward the end of that line was Jeannie Kanan of Walnut Creek, with an armload of packages to mail to friends in Southern California.

Kanan sighed and said, "I took a day off from work today. I have some other errands to do, too."

The Postal Service is on a pace to lose $14.1 billion next year.
