The candidates, incumbents and issues that will be affecting Walnut Creek

Incumbents Bob Simmons and Kish Rajan have announced they are running again. Also up is the seat of incumbent Gary Skrel, who said he is not running again.

In addition, some voters in Walnut Creek will vote on two board members for the Mt. Diablo Unified School District, and one board member for the Contra Costa Water District.

Voters will also be selecting representatives for state Assembly, state Senate and Congress. The two top finishers in the June primary in those races will be on the ballot.

In state Senate District 7, Republican Mark Meuser of Walnut Creek is challenging Democratic incumbent Mark DeSaulnier of Concord.

Here is the timeline for filing as a candidate in the City Council election:

The nomination period will begin at 8:30 am on Monday, July 16, 2012 and end at 5:00 pm on Friday, August 10, 2012. However, if one of the incumbent officeholders does not file by the August 10 deadline, the nomination period for that vacancy will be extended (for any qualified person, other than the incumbent) until 5:00 pm on Wednesday, August 15, 2012.

Nomination papers must be obtained from the City Clerk’s office during the nomination period. Candidates must be registered voters of Walnut Creek at the time the nomination paper is issued.
