Walnut Creek Woman Tours the Capital and the White House

Walnut Creek resident LaToya Brown had a busy day Tuesday: she met with Congressman George Miller, attended a full committee hearing with Education Secretary Arne Duncan reviewing the Department of Education's 2014 budget proposal, , and sat in on a meeting with the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. She also conferred with top White House administrators regarding her life experiences and her policy ideas.

Brown, a former foster child who suffered mental and physical abuse at the hands of her mother and her mother's partners, was participating Tuesday in Foster Youth Shadow Day in the U.S. Capital with Miller.

Brown was in the foster care system for six years. Despite her difficult childhood, she went on to graduate last year from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a degree in Feminist Studies. She is currently an intern with Bay Area Policy and applying to graduate school, and harbors a strong desire to give back to help improve the foster care system and help other youth.
