Walnut Creek's PACs: Who Are They?

These are the committees now operating in Walnut Creek that can receive contributions and raise money to support or oppose various candidates and causes.

In addition to the newly formed Walnut Creek Police Association Political Action Committee, Walnut Creek has other "general purpose committees" operating in town. These committees are "not primarily formed" to support or oppose a candidate or measure.

  • WALPAC, or Walnut Creek Political Action Committee, which was formed in 1985 as a general purpose committee sponsored by the Walnut Creek Chamber of Commerce.
  • Democrats of Rossmoor, a committee comprised of small contributors.
  • Yes for Walnut Creek, which was formed in 2009 as a ballot measure committee to support Measure I, the Neiman Marcus decision. In July 2010, the committee repurposed itself as a general purpose committee.

Yes for Walnut Creek "repurposed itself"??? Does that mean that money collected from people in support of the Neiman Marcus project can now be used as a political slush fund to support particular candidates for City Council?

You are so smart Obiwan! It should be interesting to read the financial reports to see just who is donating to this "repurposed" PAC and who "they" (whoever "they" are) choose to give money to. Of course the PAC does not have to give directly to any candidate. They may in fact use the option to spend their funds as "independent expenditures" which as we all know is when a PAC advocates for a candidate without the knowledge or input (wink, wink, wink) of that candidate. Seems to me that WALPAC and Yes for Walnut Creek PAC will be competing for the same funds. Martha, a good followup on this story would be to list the officers of each PAC so we all know who is running the show in each case.

Thanks for the added info Martha. Everyone should be paying attention to this. Now we wait to see what happens to their "cash on hand" column in the coming weeks.
