What Should the City Council's Goals Be in 2011?

City Council members and city staff will be coming up with their goals and work plan for the coming year at a special meeting Friday and Saturday.

Walnut Creek's council members and executive team are going on their annual retreat later this week to prioritize the year's civic issues.

The six issues to be addressed cover:

  • Creating a safe community
  • Providing culture, recreation and learning opportunities
  • Ensuring economic vitality
  • Offering effective transportation options and other ways for people to get around town.
  • Stewarding the natural and "built" environment
  • Creating strong neighborhoods and a sense of community.

While labeled a "retreat," the all-day Friday and half-day Saturday sessions will be at Boundary Oak Golf Course and are open to the public.  They start at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday at the golf course, 3800 Valley Vista Road, Walnut Creek.

City Manager Ken Nordhoff said he and Assistant City Manager Lorie Tinfow worked with consultants to devise a discussion format that would be "highly interactive" and something best described as "collaboration soup."

The issues at the forefront of the discussion came about as part of the city's Balancing the Future public meetings in 2009. At the meetings this week, council and executive team members will hear a status report on the 2010-12 budget and define the scope of the Blue-Ribbon Task Force on Fiscal Health that is being formed in the next month.
