A Winter Spare the Air alert has been issued for the Bay Area for Sunday.

Officials at the Bay Area Air Quality Management District said despite Friday's rain, the region' cold weather is trapping pollutants close to the ground and making air quality unhealthy.

The Sunday alert prohibits Bay Area residents from burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel both indoors and outdoors for 24 hours.

First-time violators are given the option of taking a wood smoke awareness class or paying a $100 fine. Second violations result in a $500 fine and the penalties rise with each violation after that.

This is the fifth Spare the Air alert issued this winter season.

Where the heck does this agency take their readings? I just returned from Martinez and it sure for all the world looked crystal clear in the Diablo Valley. Mt. Diablo was gorgeous and you could see for miles. Since there is a very brisk breeze blowing I wonder how the pollutants could possibly be trapped anywhere. And what the hell is a "wood smoke awareness" class and how much do we pay someone to "teach" it? I want to do my part but the power of this agency is RIDICULOUS! Enough already with petty bureaucrats.
