Memorial Day Vigil Co-Sponsored by the Mt. Diablo Peace & Justice Center of Walnut Creek

A similar event to the Memorial Day Event in Walnut Creek Civic Park was held at the Lafayette Crosses. Attendance was about equal to that in Civic Park event.

Prior to the event, a number of people placed flowers by crosses designated to represent a family member who had died in Iraq or Afghanistan at the Crosses of Lafayette.

The program began with the playing of Taps.  Then followed a number of speakers, among them District 7 State Senator Mark DeSaulnier.  Interspersed were nine songs sung by a standing audience.  Best known songs were "This Little Light of Mine", "De Colores," "We Shall Overcome," "Gonna Lay Down My Sword and Shield," and "Amazing Grace".

There are now some 6160 crosses placed on the Lafayette hill, representing members of our Armed Forces who have died in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. That is more than twice the number of lives lost on 9-111.   National polls show an increasing opposition to our presence in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Some 59 percent  of those polled want our armed forces to immediately return home, while 36 percent think we should remain.
