Fast, Flashy Bikers to Whiz by Walnut Creek

Expect road closures through arteries in Walnut Creek, Concord and Clayton as cyclists make way to Livermore finish line in the 7th annual AMGEN Tour of California Tuesday, May 15.

Professional bicycle racers from all over the world have descended upon California to battle their way through the 7th AMGEN Tour of California, which will have a leg pass Tuesday through Walnut Creek, Concord and Clayton, as racers make their way to the Livermore finish line.

The race encompasses much of the state via three stages, with one here in the Bay Area. See the attached map for a detailed stage-3-route.

In Walnut Creek

On Tuesday, the route will thrust cyclists west of the summit of Mount Diablo, up South Gate Road and down North Gate Road in Walnut Creek to Oak Grove Road, and then eastbound on Ygnacio Valley Road. On the Danville-Alamo side earlier in the tour, there will be closures on Camino Tassajara, Blackhawk Road and the Mount Diablo Scenic Drive. The city of Walnut Creek expects the peleton to hit the city boundary on North Gate around 2 p.m. and leave the city limits on Ygnacio Valley around 2:10. The roads will be closed during the race and open immediately behind the end of the race.

Cyclists will zip past Ygnacio Valley Road and turn right to Clayton Road, all the way to Marsh Creek Road, before cycling toward Livermore and the day's finish line. In Walnut Creek, officials caution motorists that traffic and afternoon student pickups may be disrupted at Foothill Middle School and Northgate High.

Slovak Peter Sagan, 22, won Stage 1 Sunday across 110 miles of the Sonoma County countryside. AMGEN is the largest cycling event in the United States.
