Field of Dug-Up Dirt: One Walnut Creek District Puts Its Measure C Dollars to Work

Walnut Creek School District finishes up improvements to sports fields this summer at its six schools.

Walnut Creek's Measure C is not to be confused with Mt. Diablo Unified School District's Measure C, which was just approved by voters in that district.

Both Measure C's are bond measures that allow their districts to upgrade facilities and to bring mid-20th century buildings and outside areas into the 21st century.

Over the past year, the Walnut Creek district has been using some of the $20 million from the 2002 bond measure to renovate or replace the six sports fields at its schools. The fields were more than 50 years old.

Last spring and summer, four schools received new and improved fields that are safe and state-of-the art and which are used by the schools' students and by sports leagues throughout the city. Two more fields will be fixed up this summer. Parkmead (pictured here) and Murwood elementary fields will get their makeovers.

Mount Diablo Unified School District's Measure C bond passed June 6 with 61 percent of the vote, clearing the 55-percent hurdle it needed to win. Thirty-nine percent of voters said no.

The Mt. Diablo school district is likewise dealing with half-century old schools. That district plans to fix up its aging campuses with everything from basic repairs to new electrical, lighting, and security systems and classroom technology upgrades.
