It's a Race: Now Five Candidates Have Filed for Walnut Creek School District Board

The Walnut Creek School District, which rarely sees contested elections for school boards, now has a five-way contest for three seats.

UPDATE: Robert Stankus has also filed papers to run, Contra Costa County Elections officials said Wednesday, bringing the total number of candidates who have filed to run for Walnut Creek School District board of trustees to five.

Just a week ago, people in the Walnut Creek School District wondered if there would be enough people to run for three seats on the district's board of trustees. Over the past two decades, trustees said they have rarely run in contested elections.

Longtime, outgoing board member Dan Walden had pulled papers to run in the November 2 election but decided to run after all, which left just two candidates, fellow incumbents Angela Borchardt and Barbara Pennington.

County elections officials report Monday that four candidates are now running for a seat on the board, which makes policy for the K-8, 3,200-student district.

In addition to Borchardt and Pennington, three other candidates have come forward and filed papers. They are Tobias McCabe Lester and Jon Michael Johnson and--as of Wednesday--Robert Stankus.

One other person took out papers to run: Cynthia Chadwick Darling. But in comment she made on this story earlier Wednesday, she said she had decided not to run.
