Juniors And Seniors Tie For Best Float in Homecoming Parade

Floats float down the track at halftime of the Las Lomas football game.

Friday night's .

No such luck in the homecoming parade contest. in which large groups from each of the four classes at the high school built floats. That competition finished in a tie between the senior class ("Rue Bourbon" in a New Orleans theme) and the junior class (a trip to Nashville with a pickup truck float).

Full disclosure: I was one of a half-dozen judges before the homecoming game with Dublin, carrying a clipboard, assigning points for originality, keeping with the theme ("Road trip"), special effects, and spirit of class members presenting floats.

The juniors' special effect was a real internal combustion engine inside the float turning the faux wheels and churning out actual gag-worthy exhaust. The seniors' effect was a bubble machine blowing bubbles over the Mardi Gras accoutrements.

Dedicated groups from each class with artistic, conceptual and leadership skills (and elbow grease, too) had been working on the floats for weeks. The sophomores' entry was a celestial road trip with a representation of the space shuttle. The freshmen took a road trip to Miami — the float showed the skyscraper backdrop with the beach in the foreground.
