The outlines of an landscaped area took better shape with a note from one of the Class of 2012 officers.

"We are trying to make it an environment where teachers can teach but students can also go to study in the outdoors," wrote class Secretary Danielle Johnson in an email.

The senior class is raising money for the outdoor ed area outside the library as a tribute to Matt Miller and Gavin Powell. The pair, then juniors, took a risky Presidents Day adventure, with the waters surging from recent rain, on a raft through the urban waterways of Walnut Creek, which ended up sweeping them through underground channels.

The class is trying to include Gavin Powell's old surfboard into a bench design, Johnson said. Plans also call for picnic tables, a small amphitheater/circular bench and native California bushes and trees.

Teacher Carl Ball contributed a design made by Matt Miller in an honors geometry project. The assignment had been to create a design to use the space outside the library, using creativity and knowledge of geometry.

Donations can be made out to Las Lomas High School with "Outdoor Classroom Memorial" written on the memo line of the check and sent to the school (1460 S. Main St., Walnut Creek 94596).

The project is led by the class officers:
