Walnut Creek Intermediate School has a new principal.

Mike Cannon, formerly the assistant principal at Los Cerros Middle School in the San Ramon Valley district, was appointed at a special meeting of the Walnut Creek School District board on Thursday. He takes the helm at WCI in early November, according to an announcement from WCSD Superintendent Patricia Wool.

Cannon was assistant principal for six years, and had 10 years as a middle school math teacher, one year as a seventh-grade core teacher and two years as a leadership teacher.

"San Ramon Valley staff and parents spoke to Mike's great strength as a builder and supporter of positive school cultures, his ability as a problem solver, his experience, intelligence, consistency, and curiosity," wrote Wool.

Wool thanked those who served on committees to screen and interview candidates: Dina Walsh, Tamara Schultz, Donna Jory, Cindy Jaconette, Katie Peña, Lisa Cheney, Brendan Hurd, Diane Dias, Mary Claire Caron, Katie Smith, Irene Bossert, Anne Siri, Earlene Caven and Dayna Wagner.
