Shovels in Ground for School Outdoor Ed Area

Las Lomas High senior class fund-raising led to project to memorialize two drowning victims; volunteer day is Saturday, April 28.

A construction crew broke ground earlier this week on a new outdoor education area, dedicated to , on the grounds of Las Lomas High.

"For a long time I feared that we would not be able to make the memorial idea a reality so this groundbreaking is all that I could have asked for," said Senior Class Vice President Erin Donoghue in a news release from contractor O.C. Jones & Sons and its nonprofit corporation TLC for Kids Sports.  "Students are excited by the prospect of having a new outdoor area on campus." Designs for the outdoor education area are based on sketches the late Matt Miller did for a school assignment.

TLC will host a volunteer day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 28. It "will allow family, friends and fellow community members of Matt and Gavin (Powell) to truly be an active part of the memorial-building process," said Kelly Kolander, president of O.C. Jones & Sons.
