Walnut Creeker Honored by Fusion Academy & Learning Center

Teacher Julian Golder is PERSONality of the Month

For his focus on creative ways to help students succeed, Julian Golder of Walnut Creek has been named the PERSONality of the Month at the Fusion Academy & Learning Center in San Francisco.

The academy is an alternative, college-prep private school emphasizing personalized teaching methods. Golder, before he was hired as a math and science teacher, had started a mentoring and tutoring company to teach children with learning disabilities while he was attending UC San Diego, where he earned a bachelor of science in biochemistry and cell biology.

A news release from the Fusion Academy & Learning Center follows:

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, October 5, 2011 – Julian Golder never envisioned himself as a teacher.  In fact, after graduating from UC San Diego with a bachelor of science in bio chemistry and cell biology, as well as a minor in political science, he started working in the research medical field.

However, it was apparent to everyone else that Golder was destined to teach.  At 19-years-old, Golder started a mentoring and tutoring company that he ran for four years while attending college. Through his small business, Golder tutored children with learning disabilities such as ADHD, dyslexia and bi-polar disorders because he had a passion for helping students overcome these learning hurdles.
While in his early twenties and working in the research medical field, Golder continued managing his tutoring company on the side. At that point, he had established a fairly large client base, but felt like something was missing in his small business.

Golder began researching ways to improve his tutoring venture when he learned of Fusion Academy & Learning Center San Francisco, an alternative, college-prep private school offering one-to-one classes, personalized teaching methods and flexible scheduling for students in grades 6-12.  This organization was fulfilling many of the same purposes as his tutoring company, but on a much larger scale.  He realized he had found the organization he longed to work for.

Now, Golder, a resident of Walnut Creek, is the newest math and science teacher at Fusion Academy & Learning Center San Francisco and has been named the school’s PERSONality of the Month for his unique background and continuous focus on discovering creative ways to help students improve and succeed.

“Though Julian has been with us for just a short period of time, his innate desire for assisting children in overcoming their personal obstacles is very evident,” said Head of School Sylvia Snyder.  “Passion and creativity shine through his teaching style and he tailors every single lesson to mesh with his students’ individual strengths.  It’s such a joy and inspiration to watch him and his students come alive as they problem-solve and overcome new challenges together every day.”

According to Golder, he believes everyone is both right- and left-brained, so he tries to incorporate artistic components into his math and sciences lessons. His chemistry students use paint to learn the molecular properties of that medium.  His physiology students make clay models of the human body. And he teaches his science students boiling and melting points by incorporating glass blowing activities. These are just a few examples of how Julian’s teaching methods demonstrate an outside-the-box way of thinking.
