WCI Students Taking the Commute Challenge

Watch for an increase in students walking and biking to and from school for the Street Smart Commute Challenge for Walnut Creek Intermediate today (Wednesday).

It's the Street Smart Commute Challenge for Walnut Creek Intermediate students today (Wednesday).

Be aware of the increase in student walkers and bikers in the area of Walnut Boulevard, Ygnacio Valley Road and Civic Drive.

Please tell us in the comments or hit the "Upload Photos & Videos" buttons with video of the expected increase in students walking and biking to school today.

The school is challenging students to improve safety and air quality by reducing the flock of motor vehicles burning fossil fuels around the school. One sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grader who walks, bikes, buses or carpools to school will earn a $25 Jamba Juice gift card, according to a parent email message from Principal Mike Cannon.

If the school demonstrates a reduction in motor vehicles on the roads, 511 Contra Costa will donate $250 to the school. 511 Contra Costa is an organization that coordinates a Transportation Demand Management program for the area.

I think this is a great idea! My son will be at WCI next year I would love for him to ride his bike. But the crosswalk on Mt. Diablo by Safeway makes me extremely uneasy, at an hour.

I completely understand what you mean. Besides the usual distractions, and many drivers having little or no regard for pedestrians in crosswalks (marked, lighted, or otherwise), drivers approaching that crossing in the morning have the sun in their eyes for a good chunk of the school year. Maybe you could accompany your son as far as that crosswalk? Red-light runners at Newell/Broadway are a problem, too.

@Mark, That's an idea, but I'm not sure how keen he would be with his Mom tagging along with him. We'll most likely carpool and use the joys of County Connection.

Dump-the-Pump every day for cleaner air, kids! Show your parents how it's done, and maybe they'll get the message too, and use public transit.

Our son rode in yesterday, and enjoyed it so much he rode in again today. I always worry about the cars on the road and seeing kids on bikes. If something were to happen, I'd be second-guessing myself for not just taking him. I know, not environmentally friendly.....County Connection is a good option for my piece of mind.

Jen, the answer is better police traffic enforcement. Walnut Creek Police are stretched too thin because of the freeze on hiring, while enforcing laws near our downtown bars and restaurants on weekends, plus increased multi-unit housing. Would you support a 1/2 cent local sales tax to increase police, and our great amenities such as the new Library in Civic Park?

Time to cover the open drainage ditch on Walnut Blvd. Most kids would ride/walk if a path existed next to the road over the top of that open drainage ditch. That section of road is so narrow.
