WCI Students Taking the Commute Challenge

Watch for an increase in students walking and biking to and from school for the Street Smart Commute Challenge for Walnut Creek Intermediate today (Wednesday).

It's the Street Smart Commute Challenge for Walnut Creek Intermediate students today (Wednesday).

Be aware of the increase in student walkers and bikers in the area of Walnut Boulevard, Ygnacio Valley Road and Civic Drive.

Please tell us in the comments or hit the "Upload Photos & Videos" buttons with video of the expected increase in students walking and biking to school today.

The school is challenging students to improve safety and air quality by reducing the flock of motor vehicles burning fossil fuels around the school. One sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grader who walks, bikes, buses or carpools to school will earn a $25 Jamba Juice gift card, according to a parent email message from Principal Mike Cannon.

If the school demonstrates a reduction in motor vehicles on the roads, 511 Contra Costa will donate $250 to the school. 511 Contra Costa is an organization that coordinates a Transportation Demand Management program for the area.
