What's It Like to Have Your Dad As Your High School Principal?

Two graduates of Las Lomas High tell what it was like to attend the Walnut Creek school while their father, Pat Lickiss, was the principal. They spoke at a celebration this past weekend to honor their father who is retiring after 17 years in this job.

Patrick Lickiss, class of 1999 and Andrew Lickiss, class of 2002, both attended Las Lomas High School during the 17 years that their father, Pat Lickiss, was the principal. Lickiss is retiring at the end of this school year, and a tribute was held this past weekend at Las Lomas to celebrate his career.

At a reception following this tribute, the brothers asked a question that was on many people's minds: What was it really like to have their dad as principal? Did they spend more time than most kids in the principal's office? You can view their response.

Walnut Creek city, police, and school leaders, current and former students, colleagues and Las Lomas alums turned out for the tribute, which involved a "This is Your Life"-style tribute on the stage of the school's theater.

A reception followed, at which Lickiss, a 37-year employee with the Acalanes High School District, received a congressional resolution from the office of U.S. Rep. John Garamendi.  He also learned, via a proclamation, that the bridge leading from South Main Street to the school would be named for him.

Lickiss is a long-time Walnut Creek resident. With his wife, Kathy, he raised his two sons here, first in the Parkmead Elementary neighborhood, then off Rudgear Road. As his sons explain in this video, he was also active in the community, coaching their multi-league, soccer and Dewing Park swim teams.
