The common saying around cross country teams is "our sport is your sport's punishment."

For the cross country runners at Berean Christian High, running is anything but torture.

The fun-loving runners are all about having a good time this season said coach Nick Frank.

"I want to have fun this year," Frank said. "We got some really good kids this year that are fun to be around. More importantly, we have some fantastic runners."

For Frank, having a good time is only part of the puzzle.

"My goal this year is for everyone to do their best," Frank said. "I don't want anyone holding back."

While Frank is more concerned with the Eagles doing their best regardless of the outcome, the runners themselves want to have a successful season.

"I'd really like to do well in league and possibly go to (the North Coast Section playoffs)," junior Kevin Graham said.

Senior Devin Kearns, who qualified for NCS in his sophomore year, feels this is a team that has a chance to make it to NCS.

"I feel this team is better than last year," Kearns said. "There's a lot more diversity this year. We also have some better runners on the team."

Graham feels that as long as the Eagles pace themselves and stay healthy, they can be successful.

"We have to practice peaking toward the end of the season," Graham said. "If we do that we can prevent an injury, which is always important."

Kearns feels an easy way to winning and preventing injuries is to stay in good shape all season. He feels the only way to do so is practicing and running consistently.
