The Dragons varsity volleyball team had plenty to celebrate Tuesday night.
Not only did the team host the fifth annual Dig Pink/Spike Blue event, it defeated No. 5 Dowling Catholic.
A gym of pink and blue supported the team's efforts to bring awareness and raise funds for breast and colon cancer, while cheering the Dragons to a victory.
The excitement was obvious when the Dragons' bench erupted as the final point ended Johnston's come-from-behind upset win over No. 5 Dowling Catholic 20-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-18, 15-13.
The Dragons improved their record to 24-8.
The team will play either Des Moines Lincoln or Ames High School at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, in Johnston for a class 5A regional berth.
Tuesday was the second year the team has added the spiking blue element to help raise awareness for colon cancer - something that touched each team member when assistant coach Lacey Fulton battled the disease.
Last year, the event raised more than $6,500 for Side-Out Foundation and American Cancer Society.
The evening included door prizes, a bake sale, a raffle with grand prizes such as an iPhone, iPad and iPod. Novelty merchandise will also be for sale in order to raise funds for the cause.
Raffle tickets were sold one for $5 or three for $10.
