High School Football Playoffs: Northgate Fights Back To Defeat College Park

Broncos will play Miramonte in the second round next weekend in the North Coast Section tournament

Northgate High came from behind to defeat College Park High in the first round of the North Coast Section Division II football playoffs on Friday night.

College Park led 29-27 after three periods in the high-energy game played at the Broncos' stadium in Walnut Creek, but Northgate took over in the final period to secure a hard-fought 41-29 victory.

Northgate is now 9-2 on the season and will play at 7 p.m. Saturday against third ranked Miramonte High, which defeated Tennyson High on Saturday afternoon. The game will be a Miramonte's stadium.

The sixth seeded Broncos scored first, taking a 7-0 lead early in the first period.

However, the 11th seeded Falcons came right back with a touchdown of their own with 8:20 left in the first period. A two-point conversion made it 8-7.

The Broncos bounced right back, scoring on a 25-yard run to make it 14-8 with 4:42 to go in the initial period.

College Park marched down the field and scored on a 12-yard pass on a 4th and 4 play to make it 15-14 with 8:59 remaining in the second period.

Northgate came back with their own drive, converting on a 4th and 8 play before scoring on a short run. They missed the two-point conversion and the scored was 20-15 with 5:33 to go in the half.

Seconds later, the Falcons ran back the kickoff 97 yards to take a 22-20 lead with 5:20 to go in the half.

Northgate had the ball on the Falcons' 1-yard line but failed to score on a 4th down play with 7 seconds left in the half.

In the third period, College Park scored on their first series on a 40-yard touchdown run to forge a 29-20 lead.

Northgate had to punt on its next series. However, College Park went for it on a 4th and 1 from their own 26 and failed.

Northgate took over and scored three plays later on a 16-yard touchdown pass. The extra point made it 29-27 with 4:04 to go in the third period.

The Falcons had to punt on their next series, giving the inspired Broncos the ball again.

The fourth quarter was all Northgate.

The Broncos scored a touchdown with 9:31 to go in the game and then put the ball in the end zone again with 3:00 left for the 41-29 advantage.

Northgate's defense smothered College Park's hard-running offense in the final period to seal the victory.

Two weeks ago, Northgate defeated College Park, 49-14, in a regular season game.
