Splash Opening for Concord Spray Park

Meadow Homes Spray Park, located on Detroit Boulevard, is the first of its kind in Concord.

A new water spray park opened Friday in Concord just in time for kids to chill in this summer's heat.

Spray Park replaced a 5-decade-old pool — so old that it violated county health codes, Concord City Engineer Danea Gemmell

"We needed something like this," said Andre Alvira, 38, a Monument Boulevard resident who brought his 8- and 9-year-old sons to the spray park's debut, Friday, June 15. "The park is nice to have, but [this] makes it more friendly and fun for kids."

April Waddington, also a resident of the Monument area, said she was glad to experience the park with her six and 8-year-old daughters after moving back to Concord after spending three years in Sacramento.

"[The city] cleaned it up quite well," said Waddington when asked how the park has changed over those years. "For a while, I was worried about drug dealers. But they have done such a good job making it better for families. This is nice."

Measure WW

Close to $1 million was granted to the city by the East Bay Regional Park District, a city official told Patch. $125 million of a $500 million bond extension to the district's original fund is being used to upgrade parks in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Click here to learn more about measure WW.

Other funding for the spray park comes from a State Parks grant and from parkland fees, according to the city.

Admission is free and open to the public.

"My son is so happy, look at him," said Alvira. "I think we'll be coming here every week now."
