Volunteers Clean Up the Creeks

It was the 23rd annual cleanup from Friends of the Creeks in Walnut Creek.

The volunteers got wet and dirty Saturday on behalf of Walnut Creek's creeks.

More than 110 volunteers fanned out in eight teams at Civic Park, San Ramon Creek and Las Trampas Creek. They cut the invasive, bamboo-like plant arundo, pulled out other invasive weeds and scoured banks for trash.

"A lot of it is personal trash," said Lesley Hunt of Friends of the Creeks. "Fast food wrappers and plastic bags. Oh, those plastic bags."

It was the 23rd annual creek cleanup sponsored by Friends of the Creeks and the city of Walnut Creek. There was an organized group of about 25 from the Oakland Military Institute doing battle with arundo.
