The Week Ahead: West Downtown Plan, Wind Symphony, Diablo Ballet

Some of the meetings and events happening this week in Walnut Creek

On Monday morning, a class for young children on winter animals will be held.

The "Mini-Monday: Nature In Winter" session begins at 10 a.m. at the Lindsay Wildlife Museum, 1931 First Ave. in Walnut Creek.

The class is for children ages 2 to 5.

On Monday evening, the Walnut Creek School District board of education will hold its regularly scheduled meeting.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the district offices, 960 Ygnacio Valley Road.

On the agenda is the selection of the board president for 2014.

Also on Monday evening, the Contra Costa Wind Symphony will perform seasonal favorites in holiday stylings.

The Winterfest performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church, 1801 Lacassie Ave.

On Tuesday morning, the performances of Charles Dickins' "A Christmas Carol" will begin their final week at the Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Drive.

There are performances at 9:30 a.m. and noon on Tuesday. Shows will also be on Wednesday morning, Thursday morning and evening, Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and evening with the finale on Sunday afternoon.

On Tuesday evening, the Walnut Creek City Council will hold its regularly scheduled meeting.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, 1666 N. Main St.

On the agenda is an update on the city's West Downtown Specific Plan.

Also on Tuesday evening, a movie night will be held at the monthly meeting of the Mount Diablo Astronomical Society.

The meeting begins at 7:15 p.m. at the Lindsay Wildlife Museum, 1931 First Ave. in Walnut Creek.

In addition to the free movie, the organization will elect its new officers and board members for next year.

On Wednesday evening, the Design Review Commission will hold its regularly scheduled meeting.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, 1666 N. Main St.

On the agenda is more discussions on the plans approved last week by the City Council for the renovation of the eastern portion of the Broadway Plaza Shopping Center.

On Friday evening, the Diablo Ballet will provide an evening of dance for the holidays.

The performance begins at 7 p.m. at Steinway Piano Gallery, 1605 Bonanza St.

Besides the holiday dances, there will also be food, wine, punch and cookies.

Also on Friday evening, a community reading of Charles Dickens' novel "A Christmas Carol will be held.

Two readings of the classic holiday story are held at the Civic Park Community Center in downtown Walnut Creek.

They're from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. On both evenings, the entire book will be read aloud by members of the audience.

On Saturday evening, an improv group will unleash a holiday-related performance.

"Santa, We've Been Bad" will be performed by Ready Or Not Improv beginning at 8:15 p.m. at the Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Drive.
