The Weekender: Centennial Event, Jazz Festival, Bridal Trunk Show

Some of the events happening this weekend in the Walnut Creek area

As you plan for the weekend, here are some of the things happening in Walnut Creek from Thursday to Sunday.

On Thursday evening, a forum will be held on health care in California.

The discussion on Covered California is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Oak View Room at the Walnut Creek Library, 1644 N. Broadway.

A team of Covered California certified educators will talk about the health care program and how best to enroll.

Also on Thursday evening, the city's Transportation Commission will hold its regularly scheduled meeting.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, 1666 N. Main St.

On the agenda is discussion of transportation projects in the city's 10-year capital investment program as well as the 2014-2016 capital budget.

Also on Thursday evening, a discussion about author William Faulkner will be held at a local book store.

The event is from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Swan's Fine Books, 1381 Locust St.

On Friday morning, bridal trunk show will come to downtown Walnut Creek.

The show by fashion designer Olia Zavozina will begin at 10 a.m. at Kinsley James, 1623 Mt. Diablo Blvd.

On Friday afternoon, jazz festival will come to a local school campus.

The CMEA Jazz East Festival begins at 3 p.m. in the Jack DeRieux Theater at Northgate High School, 425 Castle Rock Road.

Performances also begin at 8 a.m. Saturday.

On Saturday morning, half-marathon training program will begin.

The 12-week program sponsored by the American Heart Association kicks off at 10 a.m. at Sports Basement, 1881 Ygnacio Valley Road.

The training leads up to a May 3 half marathon.

Also on Saturday morning, model train exhibit will be open.

The open house at the Walnut Creek Model Railroad Society is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the society's headquarters, 2751 Buena Vista Ave.

The organization's 4,400 feet of track covering an area of 1,800 square feet will be on display.

On Saturday afternoon, an event will be held to celebrate Walnut Creek's 100th year as an incorporated city.

The Centennial Celebration will be from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Byron Park, 1700 Tice Valley Blvd.

Catherine Accardi, the author of "Images of America -- Walnut Creek," will present "100 Years of Walnut Creek."

A member of the Walnut Creek Historical Society and Mayor Kristina Lawson will also speak.

On Saturday evening, folk musician will perform at a local church.

Singer John McCutcheon's performance will begin at 8 p.m. at Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church, 55 Eckley Lane.

McCutcheon, who plays the fiddle, guitar and other instruments, has been nominated for six Grammy awards during his career.
