The Weekender: Ice Rink Opens, Backyard Chickens, Hospice Tree Lighting

Some of the events happening this weekend in the Walnut Creek area

As you plan your weekend, here are some events happening from Thursday evening to Sunday evening in Walnut Creek.

On Thursday evening, 
the fall play at Las Lomas High School debuts.

The performance of "Romeo and Juliet" begins at 7:30 p.m. in the school's theater.

This version of Shakespeare's play is set in the 1940s with the two lovers kept apart by feuding families during World War II.

On Friday afternoon, the ice rink in Civic Park will have its grand opening.

The celebration for Walnut Creek on Ice is from noon to 11 p.m.

There'll also be a Children's Winter Festival at the rink from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

On Friday evening, the Diablo Symphony Orchestra will put on its second concert in its 51st season.

The performance of the musical program inspired by nature begins at 8 p.m. in the Gateway Clubhouse at Rossmoor.

Also on Friday evening, musicians from three different parts of the world will collaborate in a seamless performance.

"Mamajowali" begins at 8 p.m. in the Mount Diablo Coffee House at the Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church, 55 Eckley Lane.

On Saturday morning, seminar on how to raise backyard chickens will be held.

The lecture by Contra Costa Master Gardener Kim Garner on "Getting Started With Backyard Chickens" is from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Walnut Creek Library, 1644 N. Broadway.

Garner will discuss how much space is needed, the best breeds and government regulations.

On Saturday afternoon, an educational forum on lung cancer will be held.

"Shine A Light On Lung Cancer" begins at 3 p.m. in the Oak View Room at the Walnut Creek Library, 1644 N. Broadway.

On Saturday evening, an improv group will perform at the Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Drive.

"Ready Or Not Improv: No Scripts Aloud" begins at 8:15 p.m.

On Sunday afternoon, an information seminar on solar energy will be held.

The session begins at 1 p.m. in the Oak Room of the Walnut Creek Library, 1644 N. Broadway.

Residents who use solar power now will speak. The seminar is sponsored by Sungevity Solar of Oakland.

On Sunday evening, Hospice of the East Bay will host its 27th annual Tree of Lights ceremony.

The event begins at 5 p.m. at the tree behind Va de Vi Restaurant, 1511 Mt. Diablo Blvd.

The tree lighting is done to remember and celebrate the lives of family members and friends who have passed away.
