The Weekender: Mount Diablo Bike Ride, On Broadway Gala, Blessing Of The Animals

A recap of the activities happening in the Walnut Creek area this weekend

Here are some of the events happening Thursday evening through Sunday e evening in the Walnut Creek area.

Ella The Musical
 will continue its run at the Lesher Center for the Arts.

The show about singer Ella Fitzgerald will be on stage at 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

On Friday morning, the monthly walking tour at the Gardens at Heather Farm Park will be held.

Garden Director Patrice Hanlon will guide visitors on a tour of the garden and discuss pods, berries and leaves.

Also on Friday morning, a free workshop on how to pay for college will be held at 11 a.m. at the Walnut Creek Library, 1644 N. Broadway.

The workshop is sponsored by the Walnut Creek Library Foundation and by accountants PMB Helin Donovan.

It's one of four Friday morning financial workshops being held at the library in October.

There's high school football on Friday night.

Las Lomas High School will play at home at 7 p.m. against Acalanes High School.

Northgate High has this week off. They'll play next Friday at home against Mt. Diablo High.

Berean Christian High travels to Albany on Saturday to play St. Mary's High at 1:30 p.m.

Also on Saturday, State Sen. Mark DeSaulnier will have open office hours at the downtown Walnut Creek Library.

DeSaulnier will meet with constituents from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. No appointment is necessary.

On Saturday afternoon, they'll be a blessing of the animals at the Equestrian Center of Walnut Creek in Heather Farm Park.

Horses will be blessed at 12:30 p.m. Other animals will get their blessing at 2 p.m.

On Saturday evening, the annual On Broadway Gala will be held at 5 p.m. at the Lesher Center for the Arts.

Ana Gasteyer, a former cast member of Saturday Night Live, is one of the performers.

The black-tie event raises money for local arts programs.

On Sunday morning, the annual Mount Diablo Challenge bicycle ride will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Athenian School in Danville.

There are different distances for people to ride, including an 11-mile trek to the summit.

The event raises money for Save Mount Diablo.
