Walnut Acres Elementary School was named a California Distinguished School by the State Department of Education inMore 2004 and 2008. It was also recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education in 2005.

The school has a noon league, which is a non-competitive, just-for-fun, team-oriented sports program offered over lunch recess to all third, fourth and fifth graders. The program runs from October through the end of May, with a new activity being introduced every six to eight weeks.
