Council Gives Final Approval To Anti-Smoking Ordinance

Approval comes with minor revisions and more public comment

A new anti-smoking ordinance is set to take effect Nov. 1 in Walnut Creek.

The City Council on Tuesday night approved a second reading of the ordinance, making it law 30 days after its final approval.

The new law bans smoking throughout downtown as well as in apartments, condominiums, all public places and within 25 feet of doors and windows.

The initial fine is $100 with the second fine being $200 and the third violation being $500. After that, the city can sue the offender.

City Manager Ken Nordhoff said the council made "minor edits" to the ordinance. The council also took the item off the consent calendar, allowing about 10 people to speak on the issue.
