Sports Basement Gets High Marks

Ygnacio Plaza outlet wins Walnut Creek Patch poll for favorite sporting goods store.

Sports Basement in Ygnacio Plaza this week won the Patch poll for favorite sporting goods place.

Manager John Courtney celebrated by gathering employees and encouraging them to show their guns (the bicep kind) in front of the store for a Patch picture.

scored because of its accommodations for community groups. "Everything we do here, we try to get that community aspect," said Courtney. The store reserves floor space with couches and chairs where community groups can gather — not just sports groups.

The store's philosophy is not to spend marketing money in the traditional fashion — say, with advertisements — but to market through catering to community groups. The bulletin board out front lists classes for Pilates, yoga, run club, road riding and a spin class.

In the Patch poll, was second and Athletic Outpost was third.
