Homeless Chickens? Scratch That

The chickens of Acalanes Apartments have been saved.

In May, the City of Lafayette told Acalanes Aparments that due to zoning issues they would have to get rid of their chickens. 

However, according to Shelley DiGiovanna, resident manager of Acalanes Apartments, the chicken coop that is currently located on their property will be moved to their neighbor, Temple Isaiah. 

The coop will be moved onto the chicken-friendly zoned land, and DiGiovanna said they might even build a bigger coop. 

“I’m glad we get to keep them. I was kinda afraid we were going to have to get rid of them,” DiGiovanna said.  

In a letter to , DiGiovanna highlighted the benefits of having chickens. Residents enjoy feeding the chickens and taking care of them, along with the free eggs the chickens provide. Children have learned how to care for the chickens, and the chickens have helped them learn about how eggs are produced. 

On this note, DiGiovanna said that they may look into doing a program with the Contra Costa Jewish Day School located at the temple, which would teach students about the garden and caring for the chickens. 

“I’m really happy it worked out,” DiGiovanna said.
