The Week Ahead: Veterans Day, Backyard Chickens, Broadway Plaza Renovation, Ice Rink Opens

Some of the events happening this week in the Walnut Creek area

On Monday morning, military veterans will be remembered in downtown Walnut Creek.

The Veterans Day event begins at 11 a.m. at the Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Drive.

The theme of the tribute is the power of friendship.

On Monday evening, the Stroke Support Group of Contra Costa County holds its monthly meeting.

The session is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Ball Auditorium at John Muir Medical Center, 1601 Ygnacio Valley Road.

On Wednesday morning, a seminar on child car seats will be held.

The Child Car Seat Fitting Clinic will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the underground parking garage at the Target store, 1871 N. Main St.

Technicians will be available to check car seat installations and answer questions.

The event is co-sponsored by the Walnut Creek Police Department and the John Muir Health Child Safety Coalition.

On Thursday evening, the Planning Commission will hold its regularly scheduled meeting.

The session begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 1666 N. Main St.

On the agenda is the proposal to renovate the strip of stores between Macy's and Nordstrom in Broadway Plaza.

Also on Thursday evening, the fall play at Las Lomas High School debuts.

The performance of "Romeo and Juliet" begins at 7:30 p.m. in the school's theater.

This version of Shakespeare's play is set in the 1940s with the two lovers kept apart by feuding families during World War II.

On Friday afternoon, the ice rink in Civic Park will have its grand opening.

The celebration for Walnut Creek on Ice is from noon to 11 a.m.

There'll also be a Children's Winter Festival at the rink from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

On Friday evening, the Diablo Symphony Orchestra will put on its second concert in its 51st season.

The performance of the musical program inspired by nature begins at 8 p.m. in the Gateway Clubhouse at Rossmoor.

Also on Friday evening, musicians from three different parts of the world will collaborate in a seamless performance.

"Mamajowali" begins at 8 p.m. in the Mount Diablo Coffee House at the Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church, 55 Eckley Lane.

On Saturday morning, a seminar on how to raise backyard chickens will be held.

The lecture by Contra Costa Master Gardener Kim Garner on "Getting Started With Backyard Chickens" is from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Walnut Creek Library, 1644 N. Broadway.

Garner will discuss how much space is needed, the best breeds and government regulations.

On Saturday afternoon, an educational forum on lung cancer will be held.

"Shine A Light On Lung Cancer" begins at 3 p.m. in the Oak View Room at the Walnut Creek Library, 1644 N. Broadway.

On Saturday evening, an improv group will perform at the Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Drive.

"Ready Or Not Improv: No Scripts Aloud" begins at 8:15 p.m.
