Children Trick-or-Treat in Downtown Walnut Creek

The Downtown Business Association played host to hundreds of children and their parents Friday afternoon

Downtown Walnut Creek is usually known for its shopping, but on Friday afternoon it was filled with young ghosts and goblins who trick-or-treated for candy from local businesses.

The event lasted four hours and the crowds were large. The youngsters started at the Lesher Center and made their way down Locust Street to collect as much candy as they could.

With just three days until Halloween, some parents decided to come later to limit the amount of candy their children could gather.

"We tend to come a little late so that we can get the last hour or 45 minues, so not too much candy there," said Elizabeth Strahlstrom, who brought her children to the event. "Then we go to the and have a nice dinner."

For Kurt Nunn, the trick-or-treating in downtown Walnut Creek was a chance to get acquainted with what the city has to offer for families with small children.

"This is our first year in the area, just moved up here, so we wanted to get the flavor of downtown," said Nunn. "We love the downtown area. there are a lot of different neat little shops for my wife to go in, and it's got its own little flavor."

However, Nunn was concerned with the amount of candy this weekend will bring.

"We'll meter it, we'll make sure they don't get too much!" he said.

DayOne Center, one of the many businesses that particpated, is used to having excited children in its store.

"We've done it every year that we've been here We love seeing all the little kids coming, and it's a great time for our moms to come and get together and see each other in costumes," said Sarah Carter, an employee of DayOne Center.

Carter reported that the trick-or-treaters devoured four giant-sized bags of Costco candy.

Everyone seemed to agree that the event is a great way for parents and their children to celebrate Halloween in downtown Walnut Creek.

"This year is wonderful. It feels like it is a lot bigger than it was last year, it really does — there are more business participating," said Strahlstrom. "It's really amazing."
