As we commemorate June 6, 1944, I remember the WWII veterans I am honored to have met, including two who saw combat on D-Day.
I had opportunity to hear their stories first-hand.
There was Charles, who was in an army recon unit in the first wave of the assault at Utah Beach, and there was Bud, who provided air support in a B-26 over Normandy.
Others not at Normandy include Leonard, the army sergeant I wrote about who became a POW and survived (http://www.hospiceeastbay.org/all-stories-taglist/hospice-stories/282-another-extraordinary-wwii-veteran ; Thomas, a navy submariner; and Gerald, a navy fireman.
Although these irreplaceable men have since passed, their stories live on.
I am grateful for the veterans we still have with us and for the sacrifices they made.
I love all the stories people are posting in remembrance of D-Day. Living history!
