Volunteers at Safeway Saturday Gather Food For The Hungry

Kiwanis club, other nonprofit groups team up for holiday drive.

The volunteers will be out in force Saturday staffing a food drive at Walnut Creek Safeways, with in Concord.

Volunteers will come from the Kiwanis Club of Walnut Creek, NBC Channel 11, key clubs from area high schools and Circle K clubs of area colleges.

Safeway is helping out by selling pre-stocked bags of non-perishables for $10 each. You buy the bag and walk out of the store and donate it.

The food bank has rented U-Hauls that will be driven from store to store to collect the food.

Since the food bank cannot accept frozen turkeys due to the food handling laws, the volunteers will have a way to donate frozen turkeys to local agencies that feed needy families, according to a Kiwanis news release.

For Safeway, it's part of the company's "Help Us End Hunger (Every Bag Counts)" food drive that continues from Nov. 16 to Dec. 24.
