Blaze Guts Garage, Destroys Several Cars

Firefighters keep Wednesday morning fire from spreading to main house.

A fire gutted the garage of a Walnut Creek home and destroyed several cars early Wednesday morning.

The one-alarm blaze was reported at 4:59 a.m. at 140 Greenway Dr., a horseshoe-shaped lane off Walnut Boulevard.

In the aftermath later Wednesday morning, a salvage company was evaluating the damage. A car and a utility vehicle in the garage were charred. The charred framing and roof of the garage remained after the fire. Two Acuras parked in the driveway were scorched with some tires melted. Part of the south loop of Greenway Drive was slick with foam used to fight the fire.

Arriving firefighters found the garage, which is attached to the home, engulfed in flames with several cars burning, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Marshal Lewis Broschard said.

The fire crews attacked the blaze from several angles to keep flames from spreading to the home, and controlled the fire around 5:45 a.m.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters managed to protect the home's living area, and the family, which consists of two adults and two children, was not displaced, he said.

The blaze caused an estimated $200,000 in damage, including the
loss of the vehicles. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
