Last Call For Vice Ultra Lounge

The popular and controversial night spot on Arroyo Drive closed its doors Jan. 1.

Matt DeLima may have a career on YouTube awaiting him. His days as co-owner of Vice Ultra Lounge are officially over, and DiLima made a video about it as one last YouTube slap at city officials he blames for hindering his success.

After what police say (and Delima denies) were 30 fights and 31 citations for public intoxication and other violations of the facility's use permit since Vice's 2009 opening, the doors closed for good on Jan. 1. DeLima is blaming the city's imposition of an 11 p.m. last call requirement in Oct., imposed by the Planning Commission in an attempt to reduce the number of fights.

Vice was one of several downtown nightspots that became the focus of a major political dispute between the city council and the police union in the 2010 election. After a huge fight broke out on Oct. 1, 2010 that involved 30 people and three establishments, former councilman Gary Skrel was accused of meeting secretly with bar owners, asking them to not call police when fights broke out until the November election was over. Skrel vehemently denied making that request.
