UPDATE: Woman, Driver in Fatal Pedestrian Crash Identified

The woman killed after being struck by a pickup truck while walking along Treat Boulevard Saturday evening has been identified by the Contra Costa County Coroner's Office as Kathleen Joan Moorhead, a 57-year-old Walnut Creek resident.

Moorhead was an attorney, currently working at the Fidelity National Financial in Walnut Creek, according to California State Bar Association records. 

The pickup driver, who was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter, was identified as Ruel Sasser, 70, of Concord, said Walnut Creek police Lt. Shelly James. 

Police said Sasser was driving a pickup when he lost control on six-lane Treat Boulevard at about 6 p.m. Saturday. The pickup jumped a curb and hit Moorhead as she walked on the sidewalk along Treat Boulevard.

The driver was treated for injuries at a hospital and later booked into jail on charges including vehicular manslaughter, said Walnut Creek police Lt. Tim Barrett. 

Barrett said Moorhead was walking along Treat Boulevard west of Bancroft Road. 

Sasser's pickup truck was eastbound on Treat Boulevard when he lost control. He crossed the median into the westbound lanes, then steered back across to the eastbound lanes, jumping the curb and striking the woman.  The truck also knocked down a fence along Treat Boulevard that runs behind some homes in the Sunset Park development. 

Paramedics treated the woman at the scene, then rushed her to John Muir Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 6:29 p.m. 

Bar association records show that Moorhead was admitted to the bar in 1986 after receiving her undergraduate degree at Columbia University in New York and her law degree from Golden Gate University in San Francisco.
